Job Summary

Summary Under the supervision of licensed genetic counselors and physicians, the Genetic Counseling Assistant provides specialized administrative and clinical support to a team of genetic counselors serving pregnant patients. This role assists with coordinating genetic testing, managing results, supporting patient communication, and maintaining accurate medical records to help ensure efficient, compassionate, and patient-centered care. The position offers exposure to reproductive genetics and fertility treatment workflows, providing opportunities to learn about genetic counseling in the context of pregnancy and family building while supporting the delivery of genetic counseling and genetic risk assessment services. Essential Functions

  • Coordinate and monitor the status of established genetics patients, including tracking pending clinical work-up and follow-up activities.
  • Review clinic schedules to identify patients who may require prenatal genetic counseling services.
  • Serve as a liaison between referring providers and the genetic counseling team to facilitate communication and care coordination.
  • Support the coordination and delivery of cancer and prenatal genetic counseling services.
  • Collaborate with laboratories, genetic counselors, clinicians, and other stakeholders regarding genetic testing, referrals, sample collection, status updates, and follow-up.
  • Communicate with patients regarding appointments, testing, and other care-related needs under the direction of the genetic counseling team.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Assist with research initiatives, quality improvement efforts, and educational projects as needed.

Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Genetics, or a related life sciences field preferred. Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree? No

Licenses and Credentials

None required.

Experience

One to two years of experience working with patients, in a healthcare setting, or in a medical office preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Familiarity with medical terminology, medical records, pathology reports, and laboratory test requisitions. Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Compassionate, patient-centered approach with strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary teams. Knowledge of community resources available to support patients and their families. Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard computer applications preferred.

Pay Range
