The overall focus of the Charles lab is to decrease the global burden of mucosal and enteric infections affecting resource-poor and marginalized populations. More specifically, work in the lab is focused on furthering our understanding of host-pathogen and immune responses during human infection by V. cholerae (the cause of cholera) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi and Paratyphi A (the primary cause of enteric fever) and to identify immunogenic antigens or molecular signatures for vaccine and diagnostic assay development. Research in the lab utilizes human patient samples to perform a variety of immunological, functional, and genome-scale assays to address 1) fundamental questions about protective immunity during human infection with S. Typhi or V. cholerae and the novel mechanisms these pathogens utilize to cause infection and 2) to develop rapid diagnostic and seroepidemiologic tools that can be used in resource-limited settings; and 3) improve vaccine strategies. The postdoctoral fellow will not only play a key role in research investigations, but also Research assist in research program administration, including supervision of research activities, staff training, and grant writing.

Responsibilities

include, but are not limited to, the following activities: Research • Contribute directly to ongoing research projects • Lead scientific analysis, abstract submissions, and manuscript development for 1-2 projects at a time Research Program Management • Assist PI with managing the Charles lab research portfolio by orchestrating competing priorities, deadlines, and workload in a group with 5-7 ongoing research projects • Supervise research assistants/technicians, including: o Deliver new employee training o Provide daily oversight and direction, o Assist with recruiting new team members. • Ensure research integrity, including data documentation and data management, by developing best practices, provide ongoing training, and monitoring for adherence • Manage and participate in collaborative grant-writing projects • Serve as a liaison between team members at various US and international collaborative research sites

Qualifications

Job qualifications include the following: PhD in immunology, infection biology, or related field 7+ years of experience in an academic, research, or related setting

Experience

in flow cytometry required

Experience

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties

will be carried out in a typical lab environment. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required. Occasional travel to international research sites may be required. There is also the opportunity to travel to scientific meetings to present research. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: The candidate will be responsible for providing daily supervision, guidance, and expertise for 2-3 Research Technician/Assistants or students.
