Join the Medicaid and Long-Term Care team at DHHS as a Medicaid Policy Intern. This internship offers hands-on experience in state Medicaid policy, program planning, legislative implementation, and cross-divisional project support. The intern will assist with the rollout of various projects related to recent federal changes, implementation of bills passed during the 2026 Nebraska legislative session, and planning for new or revised Medicaid initiatives. This role is ideal for a student interested in public health, Medicaid, health and public policy, healthcare administration, government operations, or public service. The intern will work alongside policy staff, legal partners, program specialists, and operational teams to support Nebraska Medicaid priorities and help improve access, quality, and program integrity for Medicaid beneficiaries. Responsibilities
Support planning, tracking, and coordination for Medicaid-specific implementation projects. Assist with implementation activities for bills passed during the 2026 legislative session, including research, policy summaries, timelines, and internal tracking tools. Track requirements and progress of legislative bill implementation and policy issues related to Medicaid and health and human services. Conduct research and analysis on Medicaid policy, eligibility, benefits, federal guidance, state options, and implementation approaches. Assist with drafting one-pagers, presentations, meeting notes, leadership updates, and internal communications. Support program planning activities, including identifying implementation needs, operational impacts, compliance considerations, and stakeholder questions. Participate in internal meetings and, when appropriate, meetings with external partners or stakeholders. Help organize project materials, policy resources, and implementation documents to support team coordination. Minimum
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution) OR recently graduated (within one year) from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited college or university (two-to-four-year institution).
Preferred Qualifications
Interest in Medicaid, public health, health communications, public policy, healthcare administration, public administration, journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field. Interest in healthcare, public benefits, healthcare systems, government communications, or stakeholder engagement.
Experience
drafting written materials for broad audiences, such as newsletters, briefs, social media content, presentations, reports, or public-facing summaries. Ability to translate complex information into plain language. Comfort reviewing source materials and identifying key takeaways for external audiences. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Teams, Excel, PowerPoint, Canva, or similar tools. Graduate-level students or advanced undergraduate students with an interest in Medicaid communications, public health messaging, or public sector engagement are encouraged to apply.
