Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Theater, Theatre Arts, Performing Arts, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, professional experience, and training. Demonstrated experience directing theatrical productions or live performances. Knowledge of directing practices, rehearsal processes, performance preparation, and collaboration with designers, performers, and production teams. Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to manage rehearsal activities, meet production deadlines, and collaborate effectively with students, faculty, and production staff. Ability to provide artistic leadership and guidance in a university theater production environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Significant professional experience directing live theater productions.
Experience
working with student performers and/or university theater programs. Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre Direction, Directing, Theatre Arts, or a related field. Conditions of Employment: This position is subject to additional hours beyond the typical work week to include evenings and weekends. This is a non-exempt position, eligible to receive overtime in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position may be subject to overtime during high peak times, etc. as directed and approved by the supervisor. All hourly employees are subject to the limitations of the Virginia Manpower Control Program and total hours worked may not exceed, on average, 29 hours per week, over the course of a twelve-month period beginning May 1 each year. Duties
55% - Artistic Direction & Production Development: Collaborate with designers and production staff to establish and execute the artistic vision and overall concept for the production. Provide creative direction throughout the production process, ensuring alignment with the intended performance goals. Participate in production meetings, design discussions, and technical rehearsals as needed. Provide artistic guidance and make adjustments to support the successful completion of the production. 45% - Rehearsal Direction & Performance Preparation: Lead rehearsals and work with student stage managers to coordinate rehearsal activities and production timelines. Direct actors in blocking, character development, and performance preparation. Communicate production expectations and provide feedback to student performers throughout the rehearsal process.
